July Athlete of the Month - Brooke McGown

Brooke McGown is a mom of three, a wife and a Kindergarten teacher. She’s also a fitness fanatic.

Growing up, she loved athletics and stayed active by playing sports, but when she turned 30, she was forced to focus on her overall health.

“I was extremely overweight, stressed, depressed and not living life,” she said. “My husband and I struggled with infertility for years which took a toll on my mental/emotional state all while the pounds kept packing on. God blessed us with our first child which took a big stress off my shoulders but I devoted ALL my time to him.”

A couple years later, a set of twins arrived, and for Brooke that meant adding more weight.

“I had let my body get to 265 pounds! I was beside myself and knew I have to make a change not only for myself but to be an amazing mom, wife and friend.”

So she reached out to a local gym and hasn’t looked back.

“I truly feel like I am in better shape now than I was in high school, which is crazy because I played three different sports. Today, I am confident to stand out and not hide in the crowd! I am happy and found my smile again.”

Brooke’s favorite stay-fit activity is heavy lifting.

“I have never lifted a barbell in my life until this last year. It feels so good to see myself get stronger and stronger.”

Her proudest fitness accomplishment has been slowly taking the weight off by making changes to her life and health.

“I wasn’t looking for a quick fix because it has never worked for me,” she said. “Growth and change has been in nutrition, fitness level, and spiritual health.  Through all this change, I couldn’t have done it without the friendships and accountability people in my life.”

Brooke wants to keep her transformation going by lowering her body fat and reaching 100 pounds of weight loss.

As a busy mom, she’s found a way to make exercise a priority.

“Exercise for me has become therapy. I am able to take time for myself! Some days I am able to really push through while others it’s a detox of everyday life. At the end of every workout, I am thankful I did it!”

People often tell Brooke they wish they could do what she does.

“I tell them ‘It’s one day at a time!’ When I started, I never thought I would get 70 pounds gone. It’s been a year and a half later! I still enjoyed pizza, ice cream, and my absolute guilty pleasure cookies.”

As Brooke’s confidence grows, she wants to try new fitness avenues so she can always stay active.

“I am beyond blessed to be where I am today. I am in a place to share my passion for staying active with my kids and most importantly - do it with them!”
