The Hidden Dangers of Chronic Under-Eating
At Natural Wellness Physiotherapy, we work with a lot of active women who are doing all the “right” things: moving their bodies regularly, staying consistent, and trying to eat healthy.
But there’s one pattern we see more often than you might think:
Eating too little.
It’s incredibly common for women (especially in their 40s, 50s, and beyond) to hover around 1200 calories a day, thinking it will help them maintain or lose weight. And while the intention makes sense, chronic under-eating can quietly work against your goals—and your overall health.
Here’s what we tend to see when your body isn’t getting enough fuel:
Constant Fatigue
If you feel tired all the time, even when you’re staying active, your body may simply not be getting enough energy.
Food is fuel. And when that fuel is too low, everything feels harder. Your workouts, your daily routine, even your ability to focus. Over time, this can lead to a frustrating cycle where you feel too drained to stay consistent with the very habits you’re trying to build.
Slower Healing and Lingering Injuries
We often see this in the clinic: aches and injuries that just won’t fully resolve.
Your body needs adequate calories, protein, and nutrients to repair tissue and recover well. Without that support, healing slows down. This is especially important if you’re staying active, because your body is constantly working to rebuild and adapt.
When you’re under-fueled, recovery takes longer, and small issues can turn into longer-term problems.
Loss of Muscle Mass
Muscle is essential for strength, stability, and long-term health.
But when your body isn’t getting enough calories, it has to find energy somewhere—and that often means breaking down muscle. We see this even in women who are exercising regularly and doing strength work.
Over time, this can lead to decreased strength, slower metabolism, and more difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. It also plays a big role in maintaining independence and reducing injury risk as you age.
At the end of the day, your body isn’t asking for perfection, it’s asking for enough.
Enough fuel.
Enough nutrients.
Enough support to keep doing the things you love.
Good, quality food isn’t something you have to “earn." It’s what allows you to feel your best.
