June Athlete of the Month: Ed O'Malley!
At 49 years of age, Ed O'Malley has managed to balance a bustling professional life with a deep commitment to fitness and wellness. As the CEO of the Kansas Health Foundation, Ed is dedicated to leading Kansas towards becoming the healthiest state in the nation. However, it's his personal story and accomplishments that have earned him the title of Natural Wellness Physio Athlete of the Month.
A Kansas Journey: From Runner to Wellness Advocate
Ed's journey began in Kansas City, but for nearly 18 years, Wichita has been his home. He is a father of three, husband to "an amazing woman," and an avid fitness enthusiast. "Running has always been my go-to," Ed said. "I’ve run 16 marathons and a couple of ultra-marathons. I love the peace that envelops me during the classic runner's high."
However, Ed's path hasn't been without its hurdles. For years, he battled persistent lower back pain. It wasn't until he started working with Dr. Allison that he found relief. "Allison helped me figure out what was behind it and to get it under control," Ed said.
Fitness Favorites and Challenges
Despite his love for running, Ed acknowledges that not all forms of exercise come naturally to him. "Any type of fitness activity that involves dancing is my least favorite. Zoomba, etc. I know I should embrace it, but I am an uncoordinated fool when it comes to all things dancing," he admits with a laugh.
Ed's fitness journey is enriched by his involvement in various communities. "In the past, I’ve been a part of Leukemia Society’s Team in Training group and used to do cross-fit with the great folks at Primal Fitness. Limitless Yoga Studio and the downtown OrangeTheory are my current fitness communities," he says. These groups have not only supported his physical health but also provided a sense of camaraderie and motivation.
Proudest Accomplishments and Future Goals
One of Ed's most significant fitness accomplishments was completing the 44-mile Brew to Brew ultra-marathon. "Why? It was 44 miles! Most runners in the Brew to Brew are part of a relay team, with each runner running one or two four-mile(ish) legs. It was a blast doing it solo," he recalls.
Looking ahead, Ed has his sights set on another marathon. "I would love to run another marathon. My back pain has kept me from training for one for several years. But with Allison and Natural Wellness helping me out so much…"
A Balanced Life: Fitness and Fun
Ed's commitment to fitness goes beyond physical health. "I love the way it makes me feel. Everything is better when I’ve been exercising," he says.
This holistic approach to wellness is evident in all aspects of his life, including his unexpected accolade at OrangeTheory. "I was named 'Studio Dad' at the downtown OrangeTheory!" he said.
Always looking for new challenges, Ed dreams of hiking the Camino de Santiago in Spain. "I love the mixture of the physical challenge and the spiritual journey," he explains.
Ed's story is a testament to resilience and community and serves as an inspiration to anyone striving to overcome obstacles and achieve their fitness goals. Congratulations to Ed, the June Natural Wellness Physio Athlete of the Month!
