February Athlete of the Month - Rachel Pankratz

Rachel Pankratz is a physical therapist with 23 years of experience and a mom to two teenage boys. She’s been into fitness for most of her life and credits a love of running to her high school cross country coach, Coach Metcalf.

“I started running in high school and got back into consistent running a year ago. My love of running has brought me to fitness in a lot of ways, along with teaching group exercise classes for over 20 years.”

Rachel has taught yoga, step, kickboxing and weight training, with her favorite activities being running and weight training.

“I’m really not a fan of core, even though it is so very important.”

Her proudest fitness accomplishment happened in her teens.

“Being inducted into my high school’s hall of fame along with my teammates from the 1983 girls cross country team [was a big accomplishment]. Although, I really hope that my proudest fitness accomplishments are ahead of me.”

Rachel’s currently training for the Pike’s Peak Ascent in August and the Chicago Marathon in October. She’s planning to run some other half marathons along the way. So, what’s her motivation to train for these races and run so many miles?

“I learned a long time ago that exercise had to be part of my life. I do it as much for my mental health as my physical health, to keep my body strong as I age. I also exercise to set that example for my boys.”

Rachel’s tried all kinds of other fun activities over the years, too.

“My ‘past life’ includes singing in a salsa band, windsurfing, and a bodybuilding bikini competition.”

She has great advice to anyone who is struggling to find the motivation to exercise.

“Find some way to move your body, every day. Find something you are passionate about, then find others who share that passion. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you lose your way, and don’t ever, ever, give up.”
