February Athlete of the Month - Jennifer Rateliff

Jennifer Rateliff describes herself as “a work in progress.” Around Natural Wellness, we refer to her as a total badass.

That’s because of her determination to overcome any obstacle that gets in the way of her reaching her goals. One of those goals is to lose 55 pounds by the age of 55, which is a year away.

“I’ve lost 20 pounds so far,” she said. “A big challenge for me is adequate sleep, so taming the sleep monster is what I am focusing on right now.”

Jennifer’s favorite type of exercise is running, and one of her proudest fitness accomplishments was running a 5k after a 30-year break from the sport.

“Running feels like freedom,” she said. “Exercise is my ‘armor against pain.’ I spent 15 plus years battling auto-immune issues and then back pain that ended in a spinal fusion. I was “way too young to feel so old. I have a lot of things I love to do, so exercise is my ticket to freedom.”

Jennifer is a Materials and Process engineer with Textron Aviation.

“I love to perform failure analysis on aircraft parts (think geeky lab CSI stuff).”

In her time away from work, she enjoys gardening, cooking beautiful food, modern quiltmaking, reading, singing, fly-fishing, and running.

“Best of all, I get to live my life alongside my awesome hubby, Joe, and enjoy my adult children, Blake and Celia,” she said.

Jennifer’s bucket list is growing. She’d love to take culinary classes, go river rafting, kayaking and backpacking.

Her best advice to others working to live a fit and healthy lifestyle is to:

  1. “Get out of your comfort zone. Do the things that you are a little afraid to do. That’s

    when you grow.

  2. Baby steps!”
