February Athlete of the Month - Dayton Pelfrey

0222 - Dayton P

Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Dayton Pelfrey isn’t your average high school athlete.

He’s extremely determined to improve his athletic abilities.

Dayton’s main sport is baseball, where he’s getting ready for his fourth year on the varsity team. He has signed on to play at Butler Community College in the Fall. He also played on the football team for a year and on the basketball team for two.

“I’ve always wanted to try high jump in track,” he says. “I feel like I could be really good.”

Dayton lifts weights regularly and often plays basketball at the YMCA or baseball at the 316 facility.

Some of his proudest accomplishments include being able to dunk his freshman year and running a 60 in 6.67 seconds.

Because of his discipline and drive, he’s also bounced back from an injury, one that could have led to a fairly significant surgery and an 18-month recovery. Instead, he worked to decrease the pain in his elbow by improving the mobility and strength of his shoulder, along with putting in the work to clean up his pitching mechanics.

“I throw a lot harder since my injury,” he says. “If you ever get an injury, it doesn’t mean you quit. You have to work harder than ever before.”

Dayton’s next fitness goal is to gain about 15 pounds of muscle. With his relentless nature, he’s got a solid chance of making it happen.

“I am super competitive. Everything I do I want to win.”
