April Athlete of the Month - Shaun Delmar

Shaun Delmar has no shortage of cool stories about near misses and some occasional hits while barreling along on a mountain bike. He has been riding for years around the Wichita area and beyond.

He’s a 39 year old father of two that enjoys the mental and physical challenge of riding singletrack. He likes taking his 12 year son along with him and the fact that cycling is a sport that you can do at any age. He says, “I ride with several guys in their 50’s who are in great shape and can hang with the “young guys”. Their dedication to keeping in shape helps to maintain their youth.”

In fact, his proudest fitness moment came while riding downhill with some younger guys. For those of you that are unfamiliar, Downhill mountain biking is fast paced, very demanding style in which you ride a gondola to the top of the mountain and rip down as fast and as under control as Sir Isaac Newton will allow. If you have 5 minutes, go to youtube and check it out. It is INSANE! Shaun was riding downhill with a very fit group of guys 10 years younger than he was and as they were wearing down, he was still going -longer than most everyone in the group.

Shaun is not really a fan of running or even riding in straight lines. He is intrigued by the recent gravel cycling trend of which Kansas is the epicenter and he would eventually like to ride in a 50 mile race. When Shaun isn’t working or riding, he likes cars and cooking. He prefers to no use recipes and just winging it mostly. He especially enjoys smoking and grilling meats. One thing that is on Shuan’s bucketlist is mountain biking internationally and enjoying some of the beautiful scenery.  His advice to other athletes is to stay in motion. “Although strenuous physical activity becomes tougher as you age, taking action to maintain mobility will help keep you going strong for years to come. Don’t ever become sedentary,” he advises.

Great stuff from a good dude.
